What are my 5 Keys to Unlocking Student Motivation?

1) Meaningful

Students must understand the purpose of the activity. If it is in an unknown language, I try to provide

context by story telling. Music in the class room serves a purpose. It can be used to reinforce values or

core subjects.

2) Engaging

Everybody is given a role and an instrument. Teamwork is constantly reinforced, as is individual

contributions to the group.

3) Fun

Silly lyrics or dances. Interacting through body percussion, or running around are massive hits!

4) Rewarding

Kids are challenged to expand on their existing skills. Noticable improvement is an incentive to keep

going!

5) Beautiful

Students can appreciate their own good work. Working on a beautiful piece is magical and doesn't go

unnoticed.
